The Tahitian pearl, at the heart of French Vahine

Born in the heart of the lagoons of French Polynesia, the Tahiti pearl is the starting point for every French Vahine creation.

No two are exactly alike. Its shape, colour, luster, and nuances take form throughout its growth, making each pearl a unique piece.

At French Vahine, we select them one by one for their character and singular beauty, then we design jewellery around them that is meant to be worn, loved, and cherished.

A pearl born in the lagoon

The Tahitian pearl is born in the Pinctada margaritifera pearl oyster, cultivated in the lagoons of French Polynesia.

From oyster to pearl

Everything begins with the grafting of the pearl oyster. A nucleus and a small piece of tissue are delicately introduced into the oyster, which will gradually deposit successive layers of nacre around them.

Then begins a long period of growth in the lagoon waters. Over many months, the pearl forms slowly, until it is harvested.

Upon opening the oyster, a naturally unique pearl is revealed: its shape, colour, orient, and luster are its own.

No two Tahitian pearls are exactly alike.

Chosen one by one

I select Tahiti pearls one by one in French Polynesia, directly from pearl industry professionals.

Shape, diameter, colour, luster, orient… each possesses its own nuances and its own character. Some are round or semi-round, others circled or baroque. Their reflections evolve from silvery grey to deep green, sometimes even to blue or aubergine.

I am not looking for perfect uniformity. Each pearl is chosen for its singular beauty and for what it will bring to the piece of jewellery.

It is then around this pearl that the creation takes shape.

Nuances, never the same twice

From silver grey to deep green, sometimes with blue, golden, or eggplant highlights, the Tahitian pearl reveals nuances that change with the light.

These colors are neither painted nor artificially created: they are born from the nacre and make each pearl naturally unique.

No two are exactly alike—and that is precisely what makes them beautiful.

Materials chosen to last

Around the Tahitian pearl, I select materials that are both aesthetic, resistant, and designed to accompany jewellery in everyday life.

The majority of French Vahine creations are made of stainless steel, notably 316L steel. Gold finishes are chosen with the same high standards, with PVD treatment on many pieces for better longevity.

I also occasionally use gold-filled, notably for certain findings and finishing details.

Materials chosen for their quality and durability, but also to highlight what is at the heart of every creation: the pearl.

From pearl to jewellery

Every French Vahine creation begins with a pearl.

Its shape, colour, luster, or irregularities become the starting point for the piece of jewellery. I then imagine the combinations, volumes, and details that will enhance it while respecting its unique character.

In my workshop in La Grande-Motte, the jewellery is assembled by hand, in small batches or as one-of-a-kind pieces.

Because when every pearl is different, every piece of jewellery is inevitably a little different, too.

A unique pearl,

a singular piece of jewellery.
